Experience AM Murali's metaphysical art journey at Between Realms exhibition in Hyderabad's Gallery Space, inviting unique interpretations.
Metaphysical art lies at the heart of artist AM Murali’s new exhibition, Between Realms, at Gallery Space in Hyderabad. The artist embarks on a ‘subconscious walk’ through a metaphysical space, creating surreal landscapes that feel familiar yet are not real and do not depict any specific location. These imagined lands could belong to any part of the world—or even beyond Earth.
The 23 acrylic works in the exhibition remain untitled, as the artist prefers not to provide specific insights into his creations. Instead, he invites viewers to join him on a journey through the layered landscapes, encouraging them to delve into their inner selves and interpret the works in their own unique way.
Kerala-based artist AM Murali’s connection with Hyderabad began over 25 years ago when he came to pursue a master’s degree in fine arts at Sarojini Naidu School of Arts and Communication (Hyderabad Central University) in 1991. After a scholarship stint at the Kanoria Centre for Arts in Ahmedabad and further artistic pursuits in Mumbai, Murali returned to Hyderabad to develop his own distinct visual language.
His paintings transcend the boundaries of space and time, creating a unique perception of depth. This characteristic in his work is inspired by his train journeys across the delta regions of Andhra Pradesh and the Deccan rock formations in and around Hyderabad. “In Kerala, it’s rare to see beyond 100 meters unless you’re on a seashore, as the view is often blocked by trees or hills,” Murali explains, reflecting on the elements that have influenced his art.
The 59-year-old artist’s works are not spontaneous expressions but the result of a meticulous thought process, which can take up to a month to materialise. “My creations take shape in my mind first, so the execution is relatively quicker. I’m usually clear about what I want to paint, but sometimes it takes time to reach that clarity mentally,” he shares. Murali also enjoys his role as a freelance lecturer at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Hyderabad. With over 20 years of teaching experience, he encourages students to explore unconventional approaches. “I prefer unfamiliarity on a canvas and encourage my students to aim for the same,” he says.
Looking ahead to his next group show in February at Chitrakala Parishat in Bengaluru, Murali reflects on Hyderabad’s art scene. “People here are exposed to a systematic kind of art. Without making any judgments, I would just say my art is different,” he concludes.
AM Murali’s solo show ‘Between Realms’ at Gallery Space, Jubilee Hills is on till January 24
