JMI students accuse university of privacy violation, endangerment by posting personal details in 'name and shame' notice.
Several Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) students on Friday accused the university administration of violating their privacy and endangering their lives by placing a notice with their personal details at various spots on the campus in an attempt to “name and shame” them.
Earlier in the day, names, photographs, residential addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of 17 students, including seven women, were put up across the university in a notice titled ‘List of students who organised a protest without any permission on 10.02.2025 at 5 p.m. Central Canteen JMI’.
When reached for comment, the university administration did not respond.
JMI students have been protesting since February 10 over show-cause notices to four students for organising a demonstration on December 15, 2024, the fifth anniversary of the clashes between anti-CAA protesters and police on the Jamia campus.
On Thursday, the police detained 14 students for “vandalising public property” and “disturbing law and order”, all of whom were released later in the day. The university also took action against the protesters, suspending seven students for holding “unlawful protests” and engaging in “vandalism”.
A female student, who did not wish to be identified, said she has been receiving messages from random numbers since the morning and is feeling unsafe and targeted. “Students have pulled down the list at a few spots, but I am unsure whether it can be erased from all locations,” she said.
The All India Students’ Association said the university had endangered students’ lives. “Who will be responsible if these students get attacked,” asked the students’ outfit.
