KIRF: Cusat receives award for best university

Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) tops Kerala Institutional Ranking Framework (KIRF) awards, promoting quality education.
Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) on Saturday (February 15) received the award for securing the first position among universities in the maiden Kerala Institutional Ranking Framework (KIRF).
Minister for Higher Education R. Bindu presented the award to Vice-Chancellor M. Junaid Bushiri at the award ceremony held at St. Teresa’s College in Kochi.
The University of Kerala and the Mahatma Gandhi University bagged the second and third positions respectively. University College, Thiruvananthapuram, received the award for getting the first position among arts and science colleges, followed by Rajagiri College of Social Sciences (Autonomous), Ernakulam, and St. Teresa’s College (Autonomous), Ernakulam.
The College of Engineering Trivandrum won the first position among engineering colleges followed by Government Engineering College, Thrissur, and TKM College of Engineering, Kollam, in second and third places.
In her inaugural address, Ms. Bindu said that higher education institutions in the State had been figuring consistently in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The government’s intent is to equip students with the capabilities required to meet the emerging challenges globally, she said.
The KIRF system was introduced by the Department of Higher Education and the Kerala State Higher Education Council to improve the quality of education in State’s universities and colleges. The ranking criteria are teaching, learning, and resources (30%); knowledge dissemination and research excellence (30%); graduation outcomes (20%); outreach and inclusivity (10% ); and scientific temper and secular outlook (10%).

Flagging the issue that tenders for the supply of train sets/rolling stocks floated by the State government for the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP) had failed thrice, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who was in the city on Saturday, said that Railways was now proposing to supply the train sets for BSRP.
