Railway flyover to improve connectivity between Kempegowda International Airport and Bengaluru, enhancing transportation options for travellers.
Travellers to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) may soon have good rail connectivity. Currently, due to connectivity and timing issues, the patronage of trains is limited, which the Railways is now looking to correct by building a railway flyover to the KIA.
Currently, the nearest railway station to the airport is KIA Halt, situated 3.5 km from the terminal and Bangalore International Airport Ltd. (BIAL) operates free shuttle services between the station and the terminal, synchronised with the train schedules. However, as the Railways operate only limited train services on the single-track Yelahanka–Devanahalli route, to allow for other trains to pass through, passenger patronage has remained low.
Recounting his experience of travelling by train to the KIA during his earlier visit, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who was in the city on Saturday, said: “It has a huge potential and it is very comfortable. There were a few technical glitches. We have to create a railway flyover (over another railway line). The team has completed the necessary work and they presented the concept to me today. This will bring relief to the people.”
A new railway link will soon connect the KIA to Bengaluru, with a 7.9-km line between Doddajala and the KIA featuring three stations. Of the total stretch, 6.25 km will be elevated, and 1.65 km will be underground, the Minister said.
If this new railway line materialises, the KIA will be connected by three transportation networks — railway alongside the metro and suburban rail. While work on the metro’s KR Pura–KIA (Blue Line) is under way, K-RIDE, which is executing the Bengaluru suburban rail project, is yet to finalise civil work tenders for the Sampige Line (KSR Bengaluru–Yelahanka–Devanahalli). Mr. Vaishnaw said the Railways would be an additional option to travellers to the airport.
