A fireworks display as part of a sevens football tournament finale at Therattammal, Areekode, reportedly went awry on Tuesday night, causing burn injuries to over a dozen spectators. They were rushed to various hospitals at Areekode. The police said no one’s injury was serious.
The incident took place before the final match of the tournament between United FC Nellikuth and KMG Mavoor. As the fireworks set in the middle of the ground began, crackers flung to the spectators sitting on the front rows of the galleries. As some suffered burns, some others fell while running to escape from the crackers.
The police said permission had not been given for the fireworks. An investigation is on into the incident, they said.
