Veterinary team successfully tranquilises and treats injured elephant in Kerala, transported to Kodanad elephant camp for further care.
A special veterinary team successfully tranquillised the injured elephant at Athirappilly in Thrissur district of Kerala on Wednesday (February 19, 2025) morning.
It was administered preliminary treatment, including cleaning pus from a wound on its forehead and application of medication. The elephant was then safely guided into an animal ambulance by three kumki elephants and transported to the Kodanad elephant camp for further care.
The mission began arouund 6 a.m. when the elephant was first spotted with another elephant. By 6:45 a.m., it crossed the Chalakudy river and reached Vettilappara. The specialised team, led by Chief Veterinary Officer Arun Zachariah, managed to tranquilise the elephant by 7:15 a.m. It then received initial treatment.
By 9 a.m., the three kumkis — Vikram, Kunju, and Konni Surendran — helped guide the semi-conscious elephant into the ambulance. From there, it was taken to the Kodanad elephant camp for expert treatment.
“The mission was risky,” said Dr. Arun Zachariah. “Though there was another elephant with it, we were able to tranquilise the injured one. It is in a weakened state, but we’ve given it preliminary treatment.”
This elephant, with a severe wound on its forehead, was first spotted nearly two months ago near Vettilappara in the Athirappilly area. It was tranquilised and treated on January 24. Although it was released back into the forest after that, the infection from the wound had not healed.
