Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre has ordered a probe into the death of a tiger in the backwaters of Ambaligola reservoir in Shivamogga district of Karnataka.
On February 17, the carcass of a tiger aged about eight years was found in the backwaters of Ambaligola reservoir, at Byrapura in Sagara taluk.
Mr. Khandre has directed the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) and Chief Wildlife Warden to conduct a probe in this regard, and submit a report within 10 days.
“Media reports had stated that there was a bullet wound on the dead animal. Besides, it has been reported that there has never been a sighting of a tiger in this area,” Mr. Khandre said in his note to the PCCF.
He further stated that local residents have expressed their suspicion that the tiger may have been killed elsewhere and dumped in the reservoir.
