A milk products dairy has been established by the Thanjavur District Cooperative Milk Producers Union (Aavin) at Thirukanurpatti in Thanjavur district for producing value-added products.
The dairy has been established at a cost of ₹7.36 crore sanctioned under the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherji Rurban Mission implemented by the Union Ministry of Rural Development. The mission seeks to develop rural areas by providing economic, social, and physical infrastructure. It aims at creating “Rurban clusters” to bridge the urban-rural divide by stimulating local economic development through various initiatives.
The union, which was started in 1939, has jurisdiction over the core delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai. It procures about 63,000 litres of milk daily from about 422 primary milk cooperative societies. Of this, 48,000 litres are refrigerated at the nine bulk milk coolers and transported to the main dairy in Thanjavur. Another 15,000 litres come from nine milk routes daily.
Most of the processed milk is sold within its area of operation and some quantity is utilised for preparing milk products.
The new products dairy will produce gulab jamun, badam mix, rasagulla, milk khoa, mysorepa, curd, butter milk, and paneer, the officials said.
The products dairy was recently inaugurated by Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhiaan. District Collector B. Priyanka Pankajam was present.
