Thoothukudi mechanised boat owners stage road blockade demanding deep sea fishing permission, seek intervention from Collector for resolution.
Mechanised boat owners in Thoothukudi, who were on indefinite strike from February 10 pressing various demands including stay permission for stay fishing, suddenly staged a road blockade near the old harbour on Saturday.
For a long time these fishermen have been urging the authorities to permit deep sea fishing. They claimed that last year, the then District Collector K. Senthil Raj had formed a committee to assess the issue and a report was submitted. They added that the report has favourable recommendations for them but the authorities have been delaying its implementation.
On Saturday, the sixth day of the indefinite strike, mechanised boat owners and workers gathered in front of the old harbour and staged a protest. Shortly after that, the fishermen moved to the South Beach Road and staged a road blockade, disrupting the traffic in the area for more than two hours. Following the protest, the fishermen proceed in a procession to the Revenue Divisional Office (RDO) in Thoothukudi.
At the RDO office, Revenue Divisional Officer M. Prabhu, Thoothukudi ASP C. Madhan, Assistant Director (Fisheries) T. Vijayaraghavan along with other officials held discussions with mechanised boat owners and labour union leaders.
During the talk, the fishermen urged Collector K. Elambahavath to intervene and provide a solution. Following this, the fishermen announced that they would meet the Collector on Sunday to discuss the issue. They stated that the decision to call off the protest would depend on the meeting with the Collector.
