The State government’s revision of milk prices will hit milk unions badly, as the increased amount will entirely go to milk producers, said Janata Dal (Secular) leader and Hassan Cooperative Milk Producer’s Society Union Ltd. president H.D. Revanna.
At a press conference in Hassan on Wednesday, Mr. Revanna said the government increased the price of milk and curd by ₹4 per litre. The government had instructed the milk unions to credit the increased amount to the milk producers. “We have to pay the revised procurement price for the milk that remains unsold. The Hassan union collects 12 lakh litres of milk a day, and the loss will be around ₹25 lakh a day,” the JD(S) MLA said.
He added that the union would procure an average of 12.58 lakh litres of milk a day, and of this, 3.18 lakh litres would be sold. The remainder would be around 9.4 lakh litres. “The union has to pay the revised procurement price for the unsold milk as well. It has to bear the loss of ₹25 crore a month because of the price hike,” he explained.
The unsold milk would be converted into milk powder. At present, the union had a stock of 1,000 tonnes of power and another 175 tonnes of butter. “By June, the total collection of milk will go up to 14.5 lakh to 15 lakh litres a day, increasing the loss further. The State government has to give directions with regard to handling the loss,” the MLA urged.
Mr. Revanna said he would write to the Chief Minister about the condition of the union and urge him to offer a solution.
