Police investigate murder of 5-year-old girl in Hubballi, parents claim abduction; neighbors protest demanding death penalty for accused.
Police have formed five teams to investigate the murder of a five-year-old girl in Hubballi on Sunday (April 12, 2025). Investigators found the body in a toilet in a house in one of the areas in the city. It was shifted to the Karnataka Medical College and Research Centre Hospital.
The girl’s parents told the police that an unidentified person had abducted the girl and killed her. The girl was probably taken away when the mother was working as a domestic help at a house.
Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar told reporters that the girl belonged to a family of labourers from one of the districts in Kalyana Karnataka region. He said they had been unable to trace the details of the accused yet.
To a query, he said officers were submitting an inquest requisition to the doctors, to find out the cause of death and to see if there was an attempt to rape.
Meanwhile, a few neighbours of the family protested in front of a local police station. They alleged that a labourer from Bihar had raped and killed the girl and sought death penalty for the accused. Some also demanded that the accused be handed over to them . Some others demanded that the migrant labourers be thrown out of the twin cities as they were found to be “committing serious crimes like rape and dacoity”.
The commissioner said that the demand for throwing out migrant labourers was unfair. He said it was not ascertained if the accused was a migrant labourer or not. A complaint is being filed.

Calling upon officials for effective surveillance to prevent such practices, Minister for Forests, Ecology and Environment Eshwar Khandre said that there were multiple incidents of domestic animals and other herbivores damaging their jaws and dying eventually due to hunger. He said there have been cases of elephant calves chewing the crude bombs and dying.
