Safety concerns arise as heavy object falls from Avinashi Road elevated corridor in Coimbatore, damaging luxury car windshield in Coimbatore.
In a second incident in five months, a heavy object fell from the elevated corridor that is under construction on Avinashi Road in Coimbatore, damaging the front windshield of a luxury car belonging to a doctor.
The incident has raised concerns over the safety of motorists passing through the 10 km-odd stretch of the arterial Avinashi Road in the city, where construction of an elevated corridor is nearing completion.
Friday’s mishap took place around 6 p.m. between Hope College and Fun Mall junction, when Mathew Cherian, Head of the Department of Radiology at Kovai Medical Center and Hospital, was heading to his residence on Nanjundapuram Road.
“I was taken aback by an exploding sound as a heavy object fell on the windshield. The object fell off to the road, leaving the windshield broken,” he said. Not to cause a traffic obstruction on the busy road, he drove away and headed to his residence.
Dr. Cherian, who was yet to lodge a complaint with the department concerned or the police, said that the windshield for the car costs around ₹1 lakh.
“It is not a question of money. Had the object fallen on a two-wheeler rider, the consequence could have been very serious. Since this is not the first incident, safety of motorists has come under question,” said Dr. Cherian.
In the previous incident, a concrete piece fell on the front windscreen of a car at Hope College on December 2 last year. The Highways Department had claimed of having strengthened safety measures after the incident.
