
Labour Welfare department announces schemes for registered and unregistered construction workers

Tamil Nadu Minister announces upgrades to vocational training centers, financial assistance for workers and their families, and more.
Tamil Nadu Minister for Labour Welfare and Skill Development C.V. Ganesan on Wednesday announced that 32 Government Vocational Training Centres would be upgraded at a cost of ₹67.64 crore.
Around 50,000 workers registered with Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board would be provided with training to upgrade their skills in construction work, bending of rods, carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, welding, painting, AC repairs, glass cutting and so on at a daily wage of ₹800 and at a total cost of ₹45.21 lakh.
Mr. Ganesan further announced that 50 hostels in government vocational training centres would be refurbished at a cost of ₹22.98 crore to benefit students who came from faraway places. The government would also provide basic necessities to the workers at their waiting spots before recruitment at a cost of ₹20.25 crore. Two old-age homes, each with a capacity to shelter 50 persons, would be built in Chennai for construction workers who had completed 60 years of age and who did not have the support of their families.
He also announced that the workplace financial assistance for registered and unregistered construction workers had been raised from ₹5 lakh to ₹8 lakh in the event of death while working or due to an accident.
Apart from the educational financial assistance being provided to children of those who were registered with Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board, an additional ₹3,000 a year would be granted to them to study nursing and to do graduation in catering. An additional ₹1,000 would be provided to the children of registered workers to pursue graduation and higher education.
Yearly financial assistance of ₹15,000 would be provided to the children of registered workers pursuing PhD. As many as 1,000 women/transwomen registered with Tamil Nadu Drivers and Automobile Workshop Workers Welfare Board would be given a subsidy of ₹1 lakh towards purchase of autorickshaw.
