Rapid response teams cull poultry layers in East Godavari hotspot due to H5N1 virus outbreak, imposing strict biosecurity measures.
Rapid response teams have culled live poultry layers in the Kanuru Agraharam hotspot, where mass mortality of poultry has been recorded due to the H5N1 virus (bird flu) since January 13 in East Godavari district. On February 9, the first bird flu case was confirmed at a poultry farm in Kanuru Agraharam of Peravali mandal in East Godavari district.
“The culling drive has commenced on Monday in the three hotspots including Kanuru Agraharam where mass mortality of poultry layers was recorded over the past four weeks. Two more hotspots of the bird flu virus have been identified in Nallajarla and Seethanagaram mandals,” East Godavari District Collector P. Prasanthi said in an official release.
“Lockdown has been imposed on the movements of vehicles associated with the poultry sector in the three hotspots of Peravali, Nallajarla and Seethanagaram with effect from Monday,” said Ms. Prasanthi.
An area within a radius of 1 km around the hotspot has been declared as a red zone while an area spread over a 10-km radius has been designated as a surveillance zone, where a door-to-door health survey commenced from Monday to determine if the bird flu virus has been transmitted from poultry layers to humans.
The police department has imposed Section 144 in the three hotspots and imposed a ban on the sale and consumption of chicken for some days. The poultry units have been directed not to discard the dead poultry layers in the irrigation canals as it would pose a threat of transmission of the virus to humans.
In a high-level meeting on biosecurity measures, Ms. Prasanthi asked the civic bodies of Rajamahendravaram, Nidadavolu and Kovvuru to initiate precautionary measures to prevent the spread of bird flu in the urban bodies.
Transport Department officials are tracking the vehicles that procured and delivered the eggs in the hotspot areas for further biosecurity measures.
