500 benefit from the exercise that lines up top employers from various sectors
Having lost her husband to Covid-19, Rani (name changed) found herself staring at a bleak future in the face overnight. He had been the sole breadwinner of their small family, and the homemaker that she was, she had to muster the confidence and skills to find a job and support her six-year-old son. The fact that she was differently-abled did not help matters.
On April 7, a heavy burden lifted off her shoulders as she held her appointment order. There was a profusion of gratitude in her heart for the Chennai District Administration and half-a-dozen other wings of the government. Rani shares this emotion with 500 others who also benefitted from this exercise. The trigger for this initiative was the Madras Grievance Day when around 500 job seekers had given petitions to the Chennai District Collector Dr. J. Vijaya Rani, seeking job opportunities.
The day-long job fair had been conducted by the Chennai District Administration in association with the Department of Employment and Training, TN Pollution Control Board, Labour Welfare and Skill Development Department, Department of Food Safety and Drug Administration, and District Differently Abled Welfare Office.
Over 1500 jobs were on offer from 65 leading companies in Tamil Nadu. Around 500 job seekers from Chennai -- variously qualified, with some of them not educationally well-qualified, but sufficiently skilled in their fields -- sat down for interviews. A majority of them could be slotted into these educational brackets: Below-SLC, SSLC, HSC, ITI and Diploma, Nursing, Graduate and Professional Courses. There were separate stalls for the differently-abled aspirants among them.
Employers who had come shopping for talent included Tech Mahindra, Anjappar, Sangeetha Mobiles, Godrej & Boyce MFG. Co. Ltd., Paytm, Airtel, and Reliance Industries Ltd.
Vijaya Rani inaugurated the event along with a host of other Government Officials. The IAS officer spoke to the participants and also presented job offers to over 20 aspirants during the event.
Additionally, the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation, Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing Development Corporation (TAHDCO), and the LDM Group offered counselling and training courses to the aspirants present.
