VIT SSL hosts seminar on occupational health hazards for women workers in agriculture, promoting awareness and legal protection.
The School of Social Sciences and Languages (SSL) of Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) organised a one-day regional seminar on occupational health hazards of women workers in agriculture at its campus in Vellore on Wednesday
According to a press release, the seminar, which was funded by the National Commission for Women, was inaugurated by A. S. Kumari, Chairperson, Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women.
In the inaugural address, Ms. Kumari said that women have been working in various sectors, including agriculture. Women in the agriculture sector are more vulnerable to health hazards due to the use of pesticides and other chemicals for crops. “The Centre and the State governments have enacted several laws into acts to protect the rights of women. Women should be aware of these laws and act to safeguard their rights,” she said.
Further, she said that Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women has been creating awareness among women about various laws that protect rights of women in the society. Many women, especially in rural areas, have also sent their complaints to the Commission. “Women in distress can contact women helpline: 181 to get support and assistance,” she said.
Pedestrians in the city have often found it difficult to cross roads, especially busy junctions, despite the presence of pedestrian signals as the green light glows only for a few seconds before the traffic starts moving. Now, just like timers for traffic signals, the Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) has installed timers for pedestrian signals in some parts of the city.
