In a bid to provide better education, Tiruchi Corporation has taken up the construction of additional classrooms and amenities in its schools.
The move is aimed at upgrading the infrastructure of schools to create a more conducive learning environment for students.
New classrooms are being built at the Corporation Middle School at Piratiyur and Keezha Kalkandarkottai. A sum of ₹4.90 crore under the Corporation’s Education Funds is being utilised for constructing a three-storey building with 12 classrooms and staff rooms. Similarly, ₹47.50 lakh had been sanctioned for constructing classrooms and an academic block at the Keezha Kalkandarkottai school.
An open-air auditorium is being built at the Mela Kalkandarkottai school and an additional building was constructed at an elementary school in Srirangam.
According to officials, the construction work at the Piratiyur school would be completed before the commencement of the next academic year. Various infrastructure development work are being undertaken at the Corporation schools and maintenance work are also being carried out.
Despite their limited resources, most schools cater to underprivileged children in the locality and have managed to perform well in terms of enrolment and academics. It is said that the Corporation schools witnessed an increase in enrolment after the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Since we employ novel methods to make learning more appealing among students, parents were eager to enrol their children here, but due to capacity restrictions, we had to turn away admission to a few students,” said a headmistress of the middle school.
