Tiruchi Corporation plans to develop reclaimed dump yard in Ariyamangalam for public utility, after comprehensive study.
Tiruchi Corporation has planned to conduct a comprehensive study to determine the viability of taking up development projects at the reclaimed dump yard in Ariyamangalam in the city.
As of now, the Corporation has reclaimed around 40 acres of the 47.7 acres under Phase I and II of the biomining project.
Apart from setting up solid waste management centres, the civic body is considering utilising the recovered land for public utility purposes, such as community centres, as a substantial amount has been spent to reclaim the dump yard.
A consultant would be entrusted with studying the feasibility of establishing the projects. “The study will be undertaken soon, and development projects will be planned based on the report. It will be crucial to find if there is a need to strengthen the land before executing the projects,” said a senior Corporation official.
A recent study by experts has inferred that the dump yard contains about 7.5 lakh tonnes of waste, including the waste below the surface level and the remaining legacy waste. The waste is expected to be removed in Phase III, which is estimated to cost ₹44.5 crore under the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 scheme.
So far, waste amounting to around 11 lakh cubic metres has been cleared in Phase I and II of biomining. In the first phase of biomining, launched in January 2019, over 7.6 lakh cubic metres of waste was removed from the dump yard at a cost of about ₹49 crore. Phase II of the project was taken up at ₹25 crore to clear over 3.3 lakh cubic metres of waste under the Smart Cities Mission initiative.
Meanwhile, work on setting up a bio-CNG plant, a materials recovery facility centre, and a construction and demolition waste recycling plant at the Ariyamanagalam dump yard would commence soon.
