Tribal woman mauled to death by tiger in Wayanad, Kerala, sparking protests against Forest Department's alleged negligence.
A 45-year-old tribal woman was mauled to death by a tiger at Pancharakolly village, 10 km from Mananthavady town, in Wayanad district of Kerala on Friday (January 24, 2025).
Initial reports indicate that the victim, Radha, wife of a temporary watchman attached to the Department of Forest and Wildlife, had gone to pick coffee cherries at a private plantation in the morning and could have fallen prey to the feline during the process.
The body was dragged inside the forest. Thunderbolt Commandos discovered the body in a half-eaten state and alerted the police and Forest department personnel. Tiger pug marks have been spotted in the region.
Local residents said the private plantation on Priyadarshini Hills was close to the forest. Steps are being taken to bring the body to the Government Medical College Wayanad, Mananthavady.
Meanwhile, protests are brewing against the alleged “apathy” of the Forest department in protecting human life and domesticated animals.
Local residents also protested against Minister for the Welfare of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Classes O.R. Kelu who visited the site at Mananthavady following the incident.
Meanwhile, Forest Minister A.K. Saseendran said steps will be taken to tranquilise the tiger.
