New police training module includes handling public nuisance issues like pet disputes, noisy parties, garbage disposal, and spitting incidents.
Perhaps for the first time in the country, a newly added chapter in the training syllabus will include how newly recruited police personnel should deal with fights over pet dogs peeing and pooping near neighbours’ gates, late-night noisy house parties, haphazard garbage disposal and spitting in public.
The newly recruited police sub-inspectors and constables who are under training have been given the new module on public nuisance and the SOPs to handle them considering the changing issues faced in neighbourhoods of cities.
The decision to add the public nuisance module has been included to train the police personnel on how to react and handle the situation amicably.
According to the police, over 50 % of the calls received by the 112 emergency response system pertain to public nuisance, which, if not handled properly, could escalate to bigger law and order issues.
“The new training module will teach them the importance of such issues and on handling them through moderation, counselling and other methods amicably,” Alok Kumar, ADGP Training, said.
“Though this could look trivial initially, it can escalate into bigger issues if neglected, “ he said, recalling a neighbours’ fights over trivial issues lead to stabbing and ending up in an attempt to murder case in addition to unrest in the neighbourhood .
“ The practical aspect will be given more importance than the theory of studying penal sections. Many policemen who are deployed in the patrolling duties in urban areas, city and rural parts of the state will have to face such problems in day-to-day life and the practical training will come in handy”, a police officer who is part of the training , said.
