CMC's Cardiac Electrophysiology team pioneers laser-assisted pacemaker lead extraction, enhancing patient outcomes with advanced technology.

The Cardiac Electrophysiology and Pacing team at the Christian Medical College (CMC) here has successfully performed its first laser-assisted extraction of pacemaker leads [wires].
According to a press release, the innovative procedure was performed on a patient, who was grappling with a debilitating infection following the implantation of a pacemaker.
The team has completed over 350 lead extractions in the past 15 years, primarily utilising mechanical tools — a testament to their expertise that has been recognised by prestigious scientific journals.
In the complex realm of cardiac care, patients with implanted devices, such as pacemakers, occasionally struggle with infections that infiltrate the device or its leads. These infections are notoriously resistant to antibiotics, often requiring the invasive removal of the infected device and leads to restore health.
The extraction of leads embedded in the heart presents serious challenges — the risk of tearing the heart muscle during the process can lead to severe complications, including excessive bleeding. The longer the leads reside within the heart, the greater their adherence, thus amplifying the risks involved in removal.
CMC’s pioneering team has long been at the forefront of lead extraction techniques. The advent of laser technology ushers in a new era, making these intricate procedures smoother and more efficient for healthcare professionals. With this advanced tool now available in India, the potential for easier and less time-consuming extractions could significantly enhance patient outcomes, the release said.
