Union Home Secretary closely monitors violent protests in Murshidabad, West Bengal, assures State assistance, deploys additional security personnel.
Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan on Saturday (April 12, 2025) said that the Centre was closely monitoring the situation in Murshidabad district of West Bengal, and assured the State all possible assistance, including deployment of additional security personnel, if necessary, according to a statement by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
Three persons were killed on Saturday (April 12, 2025) as violent protests over the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, passed by the Parliament on April 4, continued to flare up in certain parts of the State.
The MHA said that after “communal violence” was reported in Murshidabad, the Home Secretary had held a video conference with West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant and Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Kumar on Saturday.
“The DGP, West Bengal briefed that the situation was tense but under control and was being monitored closely. DGP further stated that he is taking the assistance of BSF (Border Security Force) posted locally, and that more than 150 persons have been arrested,” the MHA said.
Mr. Mohan said that apart from the nearly 300 BSF personnel locally available in Murshidabad, an additional five companies (around 500 personnel) had been deployed at the request of the State government.
Mr. Mohan advised the State administration to keep a close watch over other sensitive districts as well, and to put in place adequate steps to ensure normalcy at the earliest.
