Three arrested in SBI Bank heist, property worth ₹1.80 crore recovered
Three members of a seven-member gang allegedly involved in a daring heist at the State Bank of India (SBI) branch in Rayaparthi mandal centre have been arrested. The police recovered stolen property worth ₹1.80 crore, including 2.52 kilograms of gold ornaments, ₹10,000 in cash, and a car.
The arrested were identified as Arshad Ansari, 34, from Shehwajpur, Budan taluk, Uttar Pradesh; Shakhir Khan, alias Bolekhan, 28, also from Budan taluk; and Himanshu Bigam Chand Janwar, 30, from Motala village, Buldana district, Maharashtra.
The police are on the look out for the four remaining suspects, including the alleged mastermind, Mohammad Nawab Hasan, 39, from Kakrala village, Uttar Pradesh. The other absconders were identified as Akshay Gajanan Ambor, 24, and Sagar Bhaskar Gor, 32, from Maharashtra, and Sajid Khan, 35, from Uttar Pradesh.
Presenting the accused before the media in Hanamkonda on Friday, Warangal Police Commissioner Ambar Kishor Jha detailed the gang’s modus operandi. According to him, mastermind Mohammad Nawab Hasan scouted banks in remote areas before the gang rented a house in Hyderabad, posing as businesspersons. Using internet, the group identified the SBI Bank in Rayaparthi mandal as their target.
“On the night of the robbery, November 18, the gang travelled to the outskirts of Rayaparthi village in a car. They accessed the bank premises through nearby fields, removed a window, and entered the building. Armed with gas cutters, they broke into the strong room and cut open three lockers. The gang looted gold ornaments worth ₹13.61 crore, leaving behind gas cylinders and other tools. They also tampered with the bank’s security cameras to destroy evidence,” the Commissioner stated. After dividing the stolen property into seven equal shares, the gang dispersed to their home States on November 19, avoiding their rented house in Hyderabad.
In response to the heist, Commissioner Jha formed over ten special teams led by West Zone DCP Rajamahendra Naik and ACPs. Employing advanced technology and nationwide surveillance, the teams successfully tracked and arrested three suspects. The police are continuing efforts to apprehend the remaining members of the gang and recover the remaining stolen property.
