The ongoing overhead electrification project in the Thiruthuraipoondi-Agasthiyampalli broad gauge section is planned for completion by this month.
The electrification project on the 37-km section falling under the limits of the Tiruchi Railway Division was taken up after the Railway Board gave its nod and sanctioned funds for its execution.
Although the section was reopened to passenger traffic in April 2023 following gauge conversion, it was not electrified then. The electrification project was taken up separately under which the work of laying of masts was carried out.
The electrification project has reached the final stage. The project is expected to be completed by this month-end, said railway sources. The section passes through Kariyapattinam, Kuruvappulam, Thopputhurai, Neyvilakku, and Vedaranyam stations.
The overhead electrification project was under way in the nearly 150-km section from Tiruvarur to Karaikudi via Thiruthuraipoondi, Pattukottai and Aranthangi. Sources said electrification work in the stretch from Tiruvarur to Thiruthuraipoondi is planned for completion by March.
The stretch from Thiruthuraipoondi to Karaikudi is expected to be over in March 2026. As part of the project, work for the construction of a traction substation at Pattukottai has commenced.
