Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu called on Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi on Monday (January 27, 2025) and handed over a representation requesting the release of outstanding dues to the State under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
According to an official release, funds to the tune of ₹1,635 crore due to Tamil Nadu as wages for workers under the MGNREGS since November 27 last year were still pending with the Union government. A delegation that included Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi and Secretary of State’s Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department Gagandeep Singh Bedi also requested sanction for increasing the persondays for the State under the programme.
Earlier this month, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had, in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requested to advice the Union Ministry of Rural Development to release the outstanding wage dues amounting to ₹1,056 crore accumulated so far under the MGNREGS. In Tamil Nadu, about 91 lakh workers have been actively participating in MGNREGS work.
The proposal to revise and increase the labour budget for Tamil Nadu from 20 crore persondays to 35 crore persondays sent to the Union Ministry of Rural Development in November last year was awaiting sanction, the CM had said.
