
T.N. govt. issues order for new State-level mission for solid waste management

The Tamil Nadu government has issued an order to form a State-level mission titled ‘Thooimai Mission’ for sustainable waste management in the State. It also ordered that the Clean Tamil Nadu Company Limited (CTCL) be brought under this mission.

The mission is proposed by the Special Programme Implementation Department, following an announcement made by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly during the department’s demands for grants for the year 2025-26.
The Mission shall serve under the Special Programme Implementation Department as a strategic and administrative backbone, providing leadership, policy direction, framing and approving guidelines along with inter-departmental coordination, the government order (G.O.) said. It will ensure alignment with State priorities, facilitate collaboration among key departments, oversee technical guidance, and monitor overall mission progress to achieve its objectives, it added.
The Mission Secretariat will function with a Governing Body and a State-Level Committee, the G.O. dated April 2, 2025, said. The Chief Minister will be the Chairperson of the Governing Body, while the Deputy Chief Minister will be the Vice-Chairperson.
Minister for Water Resources, Minister for Municipal Administration, Minister for Rural Development, Minister for Finance and Environment Climate Change, Minister for School Education, Minister for Higher Education, and Minister for Health will be the members of the Governing Body.
The body will also have two to three experts as members, besides 10 ex-officio members, including the Chief Secretary and Secretaries of various departments. It shall meet at least once in six months or as and when situtation warrants, the G.O. said.
The Chief Secretary will be the Chairperson of the State-Level Executive Committee, while the Additional Chief Secretary/Principal Secretary/Secretary to Government, Special Programme Implementation Department, will be its convenor. Secretaries from departments including Finance and Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department will be members of the State-Level Executive Committee.

When reporters brought to her notice the claim by villagers that the late maharaja of Mysore Sri Jayachamaraja Wadiyar had gifted the land to them, Pramoda Devi Wadiyar said she is not aware of the matter, but sought to assure people that no effort will be made to take back the land that had been gifted by the late maharaja.
