Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Monday (March 10, 2025) inaugurated Godrej Consumer Products Limited’s ₹515-crore manufacturing facility in Thiruporur taluk of Chengalpattu district near Chennai.

The Sate government, on August 10, 2023, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Godrej Consumer Products Limited (GCPL) for the facility. In 2024, the company conducted the groundbreaking ceremony, making an investment of ₹515 crore over the next five years. The plant has created over 1,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities across various functions.
This is the largest single investment made by the company to boost its production capabilities. The plant, which spans 27 acres, was set up in a record time of 13 months.
Mr. Stalin inaugurated the plant in presence of Nadir Godrej, chairperson, Godrej Industries Group, and Sudhir Sitapati, MD and CEO of Godrej Consumer Products Limited
The plant officially commenced operations with the ceremonial activation of the production line by Mr. Stalin, who marked the occasion by overseeing the first production run, leading to the rollout of the inaugural Cinthol Original Soap.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Stalin said the facility showed Godrej Group’s trust in Tamil Nadu. “Tamil Nadu is a key market for fast-moving consumer products as many companies have set up their bases here. Tamil Nadu is a favoured destination for investors. We are taking efforts to achieve $1 trillion economy by 2030,” he said.
The Chief Minister added that by choosing Tamil Nadu as the base for their facility, Godrej was not only contributing to the economic advancement of the State but also strengthening “our commitment to nurturing industries that drive innovation, create jobs, and uplift communities.” He assured support to the industry.

While 530 pourakarmikas are on the rolls of Mysuru City Corporation (MCC), about 1,650 others are receiving their monthly salaries directly from the civic body. However, the remaining outsourced workers, including loaders, drivers of garbage clearance vehicles and Under Ground Drainage (UGD) cleaners, estimated to be around 700 in MCC, continue to receive their salaries from a private agency, according to Karnataka Rajya Pourakarmikara Sangha President D.
