Tamil Nadu Minister questions Governor's motive for leaving Assembly without reading address, calls for upholding Assembly tradition.
The Leader of the House and Tamil Nadu Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan on Monday (January 6, 2025) said the true motive of Governor R.N. Ravi leaving the Assembly without reading his customary address was not known.
According to Mr. Duraimurugan, when the Governor had raised the question of playing of the national anthem, the Speaker’s office sent a reply saying the Tamil Thai Vaazhthu would be played in the beginning and national anthem at the end of his address to the Assembly.
“Still, he has chosen to leave the House without reading his address. We do not know the true motive of the Governor,” said Mr. Duraimurugan, who also moved a resolution for retaining only the Governor’s address in the Assembly records.
Recalling the Governor’s actions in 2023 and 2024, he said the Governor was acting against the Constitution and it was not good.
He said the decorum and tradition of the Tamil Nadu Assembly should be upheld and recalled former President Ram Nath Kovind’s remarks that the richness of Indian democracy was drawn from the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
Mr. Duraimurugan also reminded the House that former Governor Channa Reddy addressed the House in 1996 even though the House had adopted a resolution for his recall.
