New Zealand vs. Sri Lanka: Rain delays toss, new bowling rules, lineup changes, and shortened match due to weather.
Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bowl on Wednesday (January 8, 2025) in the third one-day cricket international against New Zealand. That match has been reduced to 37 overs per inning because of rain.
The toss finally was made 2-1/2 hours late at 4 p.m. while the umpires waited for rain to stop and the outfield to dry.
Under the new playing conditions, two bowlers can bowl eight overs and three can bowl seven overs with shortened power plays.
Tom Latham rejoined the New Zealand linuep after missing the first match of the series, taking the place of wicketkeeper-batter Mitchell Hay. New Zealand won the opening match in Wellington by nine wickets.
Sri Lanka also made one change, selecting spinner Maheesh Theekshana in place of Lahiru Kumarat.
Lineups
New Zealand: Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Tom Latham, Mitchell Santner (captain), Nathan Smith, Matt Henry, Jacob Duffy, Will O’Rourke.
