Residents of Ward 33, Nakkeerar street in K.K. Nagar complain about sewage stagnation, authorities fail to take action.
Residents of Ward 33, Nakkeerar street in K.K. Nagar located opposite Madurai Aavin complained about sewage water getting stagnated on their streets. They said that their complaints fell on deaf ears. Their complaints have not been acknowledged and no action has been taken so far by the authorities.
They said that the flyover construction work on Sivaganga Road had led to the drainage getting blocked and it had resulted in sewage stagnating on the streets. At least, 10 other streets were facing the same issue, they said.
A resident of Nakkeerar Street, C. Karthik, an advocate, said that sewage had stagnated on the street for at least one week now and despite repeated complaints made to the authorities, no action was taken. He said that it was difficult to access his house on foot.
“It is difficult to get inside and outside the house with ankle-deep sewage on the streets. Not only pedestrains, even vehicle users, particularly two-wheeler riders, were finding it difficult to use the street..” he said.
Another resident of Nakkeerar Street said that due to the stagnation of sewage, apart from the stench, they also had to deal with mosquito menace. “We cannot sleep at night due to the stench and the mosquito menace,” he said.
An elderly woman complained that sewage was getting mixed into the drinking water line. “We are unable to drink water as sewage is getting mixed. We are buying water cans. We have also instructed our children not to venture out to play,” she said.
Corporation officials said that the drainage was blocked due to construction works. Steps would be taken to remove the blockage. They said that they had received the complaints from the residents. They would look into the issue and take necessary action, they said.
