A 61-day annual fishing ban will be enforced in Nagapattinam district from April 15 to June 14 (both days inclusive), said District Collector P. Akash in his press statement.
The ban is implemented under the Tamil Nadu Marine Fishing Regulation Act, 1983, with the aim of conserving marine resources and protecting the breeding season of fish along the eastern coast of Tamil Nadu. During this period, fishing by mechanised boats and trawlers is strictly prohibited. Traditional non-mechanised fishing crafts are exempt from the ban.
Mr. Akash has urged all mechanised fishing boat operators to return to their registered landing points by midnight on April 14 ahead of the ban.
Any violation of the ban during the stipulated period will invite strict action under the Tamil Nadu Marine Fishing Regulation Act, 1983, the he added.
