Fringe outfit members attempt to throw beef at BJP office in Coimbatore, police foil plan, protesters detained.
Members of a fringe outfit, Aathi Thamizhar Katchi, attempted to hurl beef pieces at the BJP office in Coimbatore on Monday to protest against a local BJP functionary who recently warned a couple not to sell beef dishes. The police, however, foiled their plan.
The police said five members of the outfit, carrying placards and beef in a polythene bag, were heading towards the BJP office on V.K.K. Menon Road at 1 p.m. The police, who had been tipped-off about the protest, stopped them 50 m from the BJP office. The protesters then threw the beef on the road and stomped on photos of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. They raised slogans against the BJP and stated that eating beef was their right.
They also wanted the BJP’s local functionary Subramani, who allegedly threatened the food vendor couple from Udayampalayam in the city, to be detained under the National Security Act. The police detained the five protesters and removed them from the spot.
Last week, the Thudiyalur police had registered a case against Subramani and three BJP cadre for allegedly threatening the couple — Ravi and Abitha — who were selling beef on a pushcart in Udayampalayam.
