Parks for pets to be established in Chennai and Coimbatore at a cost of ₹5 crore would involve private participation, he said. These parks would be aimed at creating awareness among pet owners and would also have rejuvenation and medical facilities for the pets.
The State government would expand the animal sterilisation project to ensure effective operation of animal birth control centres, he said. The project to be implemented by the Animal Welfare Board, along with private participation, would be expanded at at a cost of ₹20 crore.
The veterinary centre to treat injured pets in Adyar would be upgraded at a cost of ₹5 crore. The Tamil Nadu government would set up shelters under the ‘Vallalar Palluyir Kaapagangal’ initiative to house animals that have been abandoned, recovered, and have sustained injuries in accidents. The shelters to maintain them would be set up at a cost of ₹5 crore.
A policy for abandoned animals would be formulated in an effort to resolve issues involving abandoned pets and their conflicts with community dogs and human beings, he said. The government would set up a centre in Chennai Veterinary College for specialised training for animal control measures at a cost of ₹3 crore.
The Minister said that a policy for sheep breeding in the State would be formulated, which would benefit people from the marginalised sections of society.
