
Lt. Governor moots MoU with MeitY to popularise translation app

Lt. Governor K. Kailashnathan advocates for 'Bhashini' translation app adoption in Puducherry through an agreement with MeitY.
Lt. Governor K. Kailashnathan has mooted an agreement between the government and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to facilitate widespread adoption of the ‘Bhashini’ translation app in the Union Territory.
Mr. Kailashnathan, who was briefed on the app by a visiting team from the Ministry at the Raj Nivas, called for the popularising the usage of the app for the benefit of the people of Puducherry.
He called for initiating steps to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with the MeitY to implement the app on a pilot basis in Puducherry soon, a press note from the Raj Nivas said.
As envisaged, the Central government will provide the project app to the government free of cost, in addition to facilitating technical assistance and technical experts. Since the Union Territory is spread over areas with Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu speaking populations, such an app would help the people to understand the government schemes and activities properly in their respective mother tongue.
Project officers from MeitY briefed the Lt. Governor on the potential benefits of implementating the Bhashini app that is developed on an AI platform under the National Language Translation Mission.
The translation app is designed to benefit all the people across India who speak various languages. It can be used to for text-to-text and voice-to-text translation between languages.
