Tension in Kannur as Youth Congress clashes with police demanding Chief Minister's resignation over corruption allegations involving his daughter.
Tension prevailed in Kannur on Monday (April 7, 2025) as the Youth Congress (YC) march to the Collectorate demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan escalated into a clash with the police.
The protest was triggered by recent allegations involving the Chief Minister’s daughter, Veena Vijayan, who was named by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) in an alleged illegal payment case.
The situation turned chaotic shortly after Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee member T.O. Mohanan inaugurated the march and district president Vijil Mohanan presided.
As some activists tried to move past the barricade, the police used water cannon to disperse the crowd, resulting in a brief altercation.
Protesters reportedly waved flags and raised slogans in front of the police vehicle transporting the detained activists. Youth Congress leader Farzeen Majeed, who had earlier delivered the welcome speech, was among those taken into custody.
