Seeking exemption from merger of the village panchayat with Ramanathapuram municipality, residents of Pervaoor submitted a petition to District Collector Simranjeet Singh Kahloon here on Monday.
As the villagers were mostly dependent on farming, the panchayat’s merger with the municipality would deprive them of all the benefits available to the village panchayat, they said.
Only because Peravaoor was a panchayat, the villagers were proved employment under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, they added. “Due to shortage of manpower and the unwillingness of many people to work in fields as labourers, we had to use MGNREGS workers for most of the agricultural works,” they said.
As farming was undertaken on more than 200 acres in the village, non-availability of MGNREGS workers would badly affect their livelihood, they added.

“Earth Day celebrations have already started in Bengaluru, with campaigns at various colleges such as St. Josephs, and Christ University where life-size elephants made from the invasive species, Lantana Camera, have been travelling to spread the message of conservation and coexistence, along with expert talks from WWF India and Ravi Chellam of Metastring Foundation,” said the release.
