Over 2,900 people killed in hydro-meteorological disasters in 2024-25, with relief efforts led by State governments.
More than 2,900 people were killed due to hydro-meteorological disasters in 2024-25, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday (February 4, 2025).
Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai stated in a written reply that the Ministry does not centrally maintain data on damages caused by any disasters, including floods and landslides. However, according to the information received from the various State governments as of January 27, a total of 2,936 people were reported killed, 3,63,381 houses or huts were damaged, and 61,826 cattle were lost due to hydro-meteorological disasters.
The reply stated that under the National Policy on Disaster Management (NPDM), the primary responsibility for disaster management, including disbursal of relief assistance at the ground level, rests with the State governments. The State governments undertake relief measures following natural calamities from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF). The Union government supplements the efforts of the State governments by providing necessary logistics and financial support. Additional financial assistance is provided from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) as per laid down procedure, in cases of disasters classified as ‘severe’, which includes assessments based on visits by an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT).
As of January 27, a total of 14 IMCTs have been constituted for Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Mizoram, Kerala, Nagaland, Tripura, Gujarat, Telangana, West Bengal, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for on-the-spot assessments of damages caused by natural calamities during 2024.
