The Cyber Crime Wing of the Tamil Nadu police has frozen a total amount of ₹771.98 crore and returned ₹83.34 crore to victims of cyber frauds in 2024.
A press release said, the State police, under which the Cyber Crime Wing operates through the National Cyber Crime Helpline 1930, have filed 4,326 First Information Reports (FIRS) by generating 79,449 Community Service Registers (CSRs) amounting to a total of ₹1,673.85 crore that was reported lost.
The CCW, in the previous year, made 838 arrests with 34 individuals detained under the Goondas Act. The wing, through the Central Equipment Inventory Register (CEIR), also recovered 16,296 mobile phones and blocked 79,748 International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEIs). The CCW received a total of 2,68,875 calls and registered 34,392 online fraud complaints.
Based on the advice of DGP Shankar Jiwal, as part of the Operation ‘Thiraineekku’ — a statewide storming operation conducted from December 6 to 8 last year — 76 accused persons were apprehended across the State.
The CCW has three divisions of State Cyber Command Centre, State Cyber Crime Investigation, and Cyber Arangam. The Cyber Arangam engages in public awareness programmes to prevent the public from falling victim to cyber and mobile frauds. As part of creating awareness among the public, it conducted 972 awareness programmes in schools, 856 in colleges, and 5,878 in public places.
The CCW requests that the public dial Cyber Crime Toll free Helpline no. 1930 or register a complaint at www.cybercrime.gov.in in the event of any cyber fraud.
