Telangana makes strides in gender diversity in police force, recruiting record number of women personnel in 2024.
While talks about improving women representation in the police force have been on for a few years, 2024 was pivotal for building gender diverse police force in Telangana that meets the evolving needs of modern law enforcement. Alongside focus on modern policing, the State recruited close to 2,500 (about 20% of the overall recruitment) women police personnel in 2024, the highest so far.
Speaking to The Hindu, Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) Jitender said that the women currently make up 8-10% (between 5,300-6,700) of the 67,000 police force in the State and work is on to improve this number.
In November, Telangana welcomed its largest batch of 2,338 women Constables while 145 women Sub-Inspectors (SIs) joined the force in September. The trend is encouraging however the number falls significantly short of the 33% mark set by the Indian government.
As per the data shared by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Telangana recorded a total of 5,351 women police personnel as of January 1, 2023, ranking 15 among the 36 states and UTs. This includes Civil, District Armed Reserve and the India Reserve Battalion (IRB).
Answering a question at the Winter Session of Lok Sabha on December 3, Minister of State for Home Affair Nityanand Rai said that States have been issued advisories (the latest on December 5, 2023) to increase the representation of women police to 33% of the total strength.
“All the State governments /UTs administrations have been requested to create additional posts of women Constables/Sub-Inspectors by converting the vacant posts of Constables/Sub-Inspectors. The aim is that each police station should have at least three women Sub-Inspectors and 10 women police constables, so that a women help desk is manned round the clock,” he said.
