Members of various Communist parties staged a protest in Thirumayam on Monday condemning the murder of activist Jagaber Ali and demanding action against unchecked sand mining in the region.
Jagaber Ali, a social activist from Valaiyanvayal, Thirumayam, was run over by a tipper lorry on January 17. Following the incident, five individuals, including quarry owners, were arrested and remanded in custody.
On Monday, members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India, and other allied organisations staged the protest near the Thirumayam bus stand to condemn the murder and the alleged inaction of officials on complaints regarding illegal mining.
The protest was led by CPI(M) union secretary J. Vaigairani. CPI district secretary T. Sengodan, CPI(M) district secretary S. Shankar, and CPI(ML) district secretary V.M. Valathan, who addressed the protesters, reiterated their demands for an investigation into complaints of illegal sand mining and stringent action against those involved in Ali’s murder.

“Earth Day celebrations have already started in Bengaluru, with campaigns at various colleges such as St. Josephs, and Christ University where life-size elephants made from the invasive species, Lantana Camera, have been travelling to spread the message of conservation and coexistence, along with expert talks from WWF India and Ravi Chellam of Metastring Foundation,” said the release.
