Farmers seek compensation to damage to crop caused by wild animals

Farmers in Dindigul raise concerns about crop damage, chemical waste, and water channel desilting at grievance redress meeting.
Damage to crops caused by wild animals, need for desilting of water channels and discharge of chemical waste into a waterbody were some of the complaints raised by the participants of the farmers’ grievance redress meeting in Dindigul on Friday.
The meeting was presided over by Collector M.N. Poongodi. The farmers complained that wild animals had damaged crops in various places in the district and it had resulted in loss to them. They sought appropriate compensation for the loss. They also urged the Forest Department to intervene in the issue.
Another section of farmers complained about chemical wastes being dumped into a waterbody in Vedasandur. As a result of this, the people and cattle were affected. They urged the authorities concerned to look into the issue. Appropriate action should be taken against those who were involved in it, they said. The Collector assured the farmers that the issue would be looked into and appropriate action against the culprits.
Some of the fhe farmers also complained about crop damaged due to heavy rain. They sought compensation for the crop loss. They urged the authorities to desilt water channels, particularly in Nilakottai region.
Some of the other complaints raised by the farmers at the meeting were with regard to encroachments and the need to repair sluices. A request was also made to open a farmers’ market in Batlagundu. The Collector said that the request would be looked into.
