BJP shortlists candidates for Delhi Assembly elections, promises development without stopping existing subsidies, challenging AAP and Congress.
The BJP has shortlisted three to four candidates in each of the 70 Assembly constituencies from a list of over 700 names for the election due in February next year, a senior party leader said on Friday.
“A committee headed by Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva met on Thursday to screen the names,” added the leader.
The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has already announced candidates on all the seats while the Congress has declared 21 names so far.
Addressing a press conference, BJP MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri said the party had received feedback from everyone that only a “double-engine government” — having the same party in Delhi as the one at the Centre — could turn the Capital into a “world-class” city.
“The people of Delhi are fed up with Arvind Kejriwal (AAP national convener and former Chief Minister) blaming the Centre for stalling development schemes. The BJP will be at the Centre for at least four more years. Delhi residents are looking towards the BJP to bring development to the city,” he said.
Mr. Bidhuri reiterated that if his party wins, it will not stop the Delhi government’s subsidised services, including electricity, water, and bus rides for women. Instead, the BJP would work towards improving the existing services.
“What is the point of providing free water if it is dirty or free bus rides if the bus system is outdated? Or announcing a scheme to provide monthly financial assistance to women if it is not implemented,” asked the BJP MP.
