31 shops sealed in Erode for unpaid rent arrears, with over 200 shopkeepers owing ₹2.75 crore in total.
Corporation officials sealed 31 shops across two commercial complexes in Erode on Monday over unpaid rent arrears.
Of these, 25 shops were located at the E.K.M. Abdul Gani Textile Hub (Gani Market), while six were situated at the commercial complex on R.K.V. Road.
Officials said that in the first phase, shops with outstanding dues exceeding ₹1 lakh were sealed. Notices were pasted on the shutters following instructions from the Corporation Commissioner (in-charge). They added that over 200 shopkeepers still owe a total of ₹2.75 crore in arrears, despite being issued two prior notices. Officials emphasised that ample time had been given to clear the dues, and shops would continue to be sealed in phases.
It may be recalled that on March 13, officials had served notices on traders, instructing them to settle their dues within three days. On Monday, before the shops opened at 10 a.m., officials proceeded with sealing of shops.
