Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday (April 3, 2025) announced in the State Assembly that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) will move the Supreme Court against the ‘controversial’ Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday (April 3, 2025) announced in the State Assembly that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) will move the Supreme Court against the ‘controversial’ Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which was passed in the Lok Sabha well past midnight on Wednesday (April 2, 2025), after a 12-hour-long debate.
Recalling the resolution adopted by the Tamil Nadu Assembly on March 27, 2025, urging the Centre to completely withdraw the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, Mr. Stalin said: “The proposed amendments to the Waqf Act, 1995, are detrimental to the religious harmony of India and will severely impact the minority Muslim community.”
He said most of the political parties in India have opposed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. “Despite this, the amendment Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha, which is highly condemnable. A total of 232 MPs voted against the Bill, while 288 MPs voted in favour. Although the amendment Bill has been passed, the number of those who voted against it is not small. This amendment Bill should not just be opposed but should be completely withdrawn,” he said.
“Despite the opposition of most of the political parties in India, and with the support of a few coalition parties, this Bill was passed around 2 a.m. This is an attack on the Constitution of India. It is an action that undermines religious harmony. Tamil Nadu will fight against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which undermines the autonomy of the Waqf Board and creates threats for the minority Muslim community. We will fight and we will win,” he said.
As a mark of protest against the passage of Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, in Lok Sabha, the Chief Minister, his cabinet colleagues, and MLAs of the DMK and its allies participated in the Assembly proceedings wearing black badges. Opposing the Chief Minister’s speech, BJP MLAs staged a walkout. All the other political parties, including the AIADMK, the principal opposition party, welcomed the Chief Minister’s announcement, condemning the passage of the Bill. The Chief Minister and members also raised slogans demanding the Bill be withdrawn.
Meanwhile, BJP State president K. Annamalai in a social media post, alleged that the DMK is staging a “drama” to save a portion of their minority vote bank.
“Has the T.N. CM not realised that it is not just Hindus but also Christians who are the affected parties due to the previous Waqf law? Kindly don’t use the Assembly for your theatrics. DMK will make this an election plank and misguide innocent Muslims in the 2026 Assembly and 2029 Parliament elections. DMK only knows to deceive and divide,” he alleged.

When reporters brought to her notice the claim by villagers that the late maharaja of Mysore Sri Jayachamaraja Wadiyar had gifted the land to them, Pramoda Devi Wadiyar said she is not aware of the matter, but sought to assure people that no effort will be made to take back the land that had been gifted by the late maharaja.
