RGUHS new campus in Ramanagara to be completed by December 2025, retirement age of Super Speciality Doctors to increase.
The new campus and medical college of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), coming up in Ramanagara, will be completed by December-end 2025, said Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil.
During an interaction at The Hindu office on Thursday, he said 30% of the work of the new campus has been completed and the remaining work is in full swing. “The deadline has already been given to the contractors to complete the work of the medical college building and campus by December end. After that, the administration of RGUHS will be completely shifted to the new building,” he said.
In 2006, the RGUHS Act was amended to shift the RGUHS campus to Ramanagara from Bengaluru. However, various reasons, including farmers going to court seeking more compensation, had stalled this process, said the Minister. “But now the construction work is progressing well. This is a project of about ₹600 crore and there is no shortage of funds,” he added.
Last year, the government, which had announced opening new government medical colleges in Ramanagara and Kanakapura, has now taken steps to start a college only in Ramanagara. “We have not submitted a proposal for Kanakapura this year,” Dr. Patil said.
“It has been decided to start the college in the building of the district hospital that is already functioning in Ramanagara. Once the NMC comes and inspects it, the recruitment of necessary staff, including faculty, will be completed. However, many more processes need to be completed for the establishment of a government medical college in Kanakapura. Therefore, a government medical college will be started in Ramanagara from 2025-26,” he explained.
Dr. Patil said directors would be appointed soon for Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research and Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, who currently only have temporary posting.
“Some changes are being made in the recruitment rules, and a meeting in this regard will be held on April 17. Then fresh applications will be called for the director post. Action will also be taken soon for the appointment of the director of Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology too,” he explained.

When reporters brought to her notice the claim by villagers that the late maharaja of Mysore Sri Jayachamaraja Wadiyar had gifted the land to them, Pramoda Devi Wadiyar said she is not aware of the matter, but sought to assure people that no effort will be made to take back the land that had been gifted by the late maharaja.
