Rameswaram fishermen demand release of arrested colleagues and boats seized by Sri Lankan Navy, sparking indefinite protest.
Following arrest of 32 Rameswaram fishermen and seizure of five fishing vessels by Sri Lankan Navy on Sunday (February 23), fishermen association started an indefinite protest from Monday demanding immediate release of fishermen and boats.
Sri Lankan Navy arrested the fishermen from Rameswaram and nearby areas on Sunday and seized their five trawlers belonging to Jesu Raja, Viyakulam, Jayaprakash, Arokiya Mandro and Gopal on charges of poaching and breaking the International Maritime Boundary along the Palk Straits.
Protesting the arrest, more than 700 boats in Rameswaram and Pamban were anchored on the shore. Fishermen who resisted the arrest said they would not be entering the sea until further positive developments are announced.
Jesu Raja, leader of All Mechanised Boats Fishermen Association said though they had condemned the early arrest of 10 fishermen and seizure of three boats by Sri Lankan Navy no actions were taken by the Union government.
Now, as next development in the series of arrests, 32 fishermen were held by the Sri Lankan Navy, he added.
Demanding a permanent solution to the protests, he said, they have called on all the fishermen associations, both mechanised and country boat, to discuss on carrying out a mass protest to press on their needs.
R. Sagayam, President, Saveriyar mechanised boats fishermen welfare association said each boat which costs from ₹25 lakh to ₹50 lakh were easily being seized by the Sri Lankan Navy.
