The State Tuberculosis Office (STC), Puducherry, in collaboration with Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (IGMCRI), organised a marathon to raise awareness about tuberculosis.
Over 300 runners participated in the marathon with the theme, ‘Join the race to end TB,’ organised as part of the 100-day TB campaign being conducted across the country.
R. Kalaivanan, Senior Superintendent of Police (Law and Order), V. Ravichandran, Director of Health, flagged off the marathon in the presence of C. Udayashankar, Director of IGMCRI, Ramachandra Bhat, Dean, Kavita Vasudevan, Professor and Head of Community Medicine, IGMCRI, C. Venkatesh, State TB Officer and Surya, State consultant.
The run that started from IGMCRI, Kadirkamam culminated at the Gandhi Thidal, after covering a distance of five kilometres. A team led by R. Anandaraj, NTEP-STF coordinated the event.
According to organisers, given the prevailing burden of TB in India, such initiatives would help educate communities about the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of TB, and the need to adopt a healthier lifestyle to combat the disease.
