
CM releases medical textbook on diabetes

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday released the first copy of the medical textbook titled Management of Diabetic Complications: Calling for a Team Approach, edited by Dr. Georgi Abraham Department of Nephrology at MGM Healthcare, Chennai) along with diabetologist Dr. Jothydev Kesavadev, Dr. Priyanka Govindan, Dr. Nanditha Arun and Dr. Suneeta Teckchandani at the Chief Minister’s chamber on Wednesday.
The book published by Springer discusses in 26 chapters the management of various diabetic complications in Indian settings.
According to the National Family Health Survey (2019-21), Kerala has the highest diabetic prevalence in the country at 27.4%, followed by Tamil Nadu (22.3%) and Puducherry (22%). The ICMR-INDIAB study in the same period put the diabetes prevalence in Kerala at 23.6%
Diabetes affects predominantly both small and large blood vessels all over the body. Many patients with diabetes suffer from complex multi-organ complications that can range from mild to life-threatening – necessitating prompt attention and effective management.
The book deals with all aspects of diabetes, its complications and is a guide on how these can be prevented/managed by clinicians.
