
₹4.14 crore lost to cyber fraud returned to victims in 2024: Puducherry police

According to a police official, a total of ₹46.08 crore was lost by victims to cyber fraud last year as against ₹10.83 crore in 2023. Of this, ₹4.14 crore was returned to cybercrime victims in 2024. If the cyber offence is reported immediately within the ‘golden time’ (within 30 minutes of the offence), the possibility of recovering the entire amount lost is high, he said.
Police sources said that online trading, online part-time job fraud, fedex courier scam, and instant loan app fraud were the largest cybercrime scams (in terms of financial loss) reported in Puducherry in the last two years. Apart from this, an online scam called ‘digital arrest’ has also emerged.
In a digital arrest scam, fraudsters impersonate law enforcement officials to deceive their victims. As many as 46 complaints of digital arrest scam were received by the cybercrime police in 2023, while 175 complaints were received in 2024.
The Puducherry government has designated the Director of Information Technology as the Chief Information Security Officer, and a special committee will be constituted to prepare a cyber security policy for the Union Territory, the officer added.
The cybercrime police has provided multiple channels for reporting cyber offences. Citizens can seek assistance by dialling the cybercrime helpline number 1930 or by visiting the official website, www.cybercrime.gov.in. Victims are also encouraged to visit the cybercrime police station for in-person assistance and guidance.
