A group of youngsters engaged in fisticuffs in front the local residents at Othukkungal near Kottakkal in Malappuram district of Kerala recently, claiming that they had been “supplied poor-quality MDMA”.
The people as well as the police who intervened were shaken by the incident, which raised concerns about the brazen nature of the violent altercation among the youngsters over MDMA.
“The synthetic drug problem has become so rampant that young people are now openly fighting over it. They don’t care for the people or the police,” said Abdul Kareem, a local civic body member who called the police as the youngsters continued to fight even after stopped by the people.
Those engaged in the fight claimed that the MDMA supplied by one of them was adulterated and that it contained camphor. Another youngster was heard asserting that it was “pure stuff” and that there was no adulteration.
The police searched the youngsters but found neither MDMA nor camphor from them. The incident happened on Saturday evening.
No case has been registered. The police said they had noted the identities of the persons involved in the fight.
